Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

The Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon has been a mainstay of the Prairie du Chien community for the last 38 years. During that time it has raised over $600,000 for Heart Disease and Cancer Research. This year I offered to cover the event for the local press because one of my missions of the year is to do more photojournalistic work and help out within the local community.

I love photojournalism. The best photographs tell a story and photojournalism is always about finding the story and telling it. Who was there? Who are the key players? What happened? This event covered so much and had many stories running through it. But one which I latched onto was the story of Tom Nelson, the host of the event. Tom is a very generous guy who does lots of things around the community and through the entire night I kept a particularly close eye on him. He’s a real character and a great host for the event.

Other stories at the event were the ones involving local volunteers and sponsors who gave their time to help and add to the event. Local artist John Mundt offered personalized caricatures for $7 and raised $250 throughout the night.

And the Local Fire Department joined in to take donations over the phone.

I really enjoyed the entire night which ran from 5pm Saturday till 1am Sunday morning. It was a long night and I had to thank my Wife Sarah for joining me, even though it was our 1 year anniversary.

The show was aired on local cable and Ustream and through call-in donations and local sponsorships earned almost $32,000 in one night.

I love it when a community comes together and just does what they can to help towards a good cause. More images of the event can be found in the #content_left { width: 680px; text-align:justify; text-justify:inter-word; float: left; }
